Like all Zoom recorders, the H1's onboard microphones are configured in an X/Y pattern for stunning stereo imaging. Because both mics are arranged on the same axis, they are equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is great stereo recordings with natural depth and accurate imaging.

The H1's built-in directional microphones focus on the sound being recorded. Unlike omnidirectional microphones, which pick up sound all around indiscriminately, the H1 mics ignore the unwanted noise behind them.

The high-quality built-in preamp can be set to a recording level from 1 and 100. Set the recording level based on your specific needs. You can record anything from subtle nature sounds to a thunderous rock band. You can also achieve clear, undistorted recordings by enabling the AUTO LEVEL function.

The H1 can record linear PCM (WAV) files at 24-bit/96 kHz, which far exceeds CD quality, allowing the delicate reverberations of natural sounds and acoustic instruments to be recorded faithfully. The H1 can also record in MP3 format to maximize the recording time. These formats are perfect for the web posting or e-mailing to your fans.

Using compact and readily-available microSD cards as recording media, you can use up to a 32 GB microSDHC card to record about 50 hours of audio in 16-bit/44.1 kHz WAV format or 555 hours in 128 kbps MP3 format.

The first portable Mid-Side recorder

The H2n is the first handheld recorder to offer Mid-Side stereo recording, a technique used for many years in film and broadcast, where ambiance and surrounding noise are crucial. Mid-Side recording combines a uni-directional Mid mic that captures sound directly in front of you and a bi-directional Side mic that captures sound from your left and right. By increasing or decreasing the level of the Side mic, you can control the width of the stereo field, which gives you incredible flexibility over your recordings. If you record in RAW mode, you can even adjust the stereo width after recording.

Completely surrounded

Using the H2n’s Mid-Side and X/Y mics together, you can create stunning 360° surround sound recordings. Choose between 2-channel mode, which combines the Mid-Side and X/Y mics, and 4-channel mode, which records two separate stereo files, allowing you even more post-production capability. No matter which mode you use, you’ll get perfectly balanced, surround sound recordings.

20 hours of battery life

The H2n provides over 20 hours of continuous operation on just two standard AA alkaline batteries! This astonishing feature enhances the H2n’s flexibility and convenience. In addition, the H2n can also operate using an AC adapter, which is included in the optional APH-2n Accessory Pack.

The H4n uses compact SD or high-capacity SDHC memory cards of up to 32GB. Unlike other media such as tape or discs, SD cards produce no mechanical noise, are not disturbed by vibrations and are readily available for your convenience.
