A Happy Secret [Piano]
Features:
This is a perfect recital piece for the early beginner who has learned about C and G hand positions. The right hand is required to move several times, but the left hand remains in basic C position, with only 5 notes to remember. The rhythm is basic, quarter and half notes, with no accidentals, and easy dynamic changes. There are slurs, ties and rests, and an option to use the sustain pedal on the last line.

A Jolly Jest
Features:
Description: This is a jolly piece built mostly of primary triad positions in D minor and G major -the exception being b flat and E harmonies. A bright, allegro tempo adds to the humor of the jest. Purpose: The purpose of this piece is to offer a cheerful 6/8 setting that explores the two basic rhythm patterns but without the tarantella sound. Suggestions for Instruction: Notice that the LH patterns all consist of blocked fifths and broken, root position triads. The LH will need to be able to move from one position to the other with ease, grace and security to keep the tempo moving forward. The reaches demanded of the RH generally outline chord inversions. If the student's theory background has reached this level, the relationship of the b flat harmony (relative minor) and the E Major harmony (secondary dominant) could be analyzed and discussed. Key: D minor

This beautiful melody will linger long after the last note is silent. Very much like a lyrical Chopin waltz or quiet mazurka. Key: E Minor.

A Puppy Named Mozart [Piano]
Features:
Margaret Goldston introduces us to her very own puppy named Mozart in this delightful solo. Her puppy truly does love to play the piano as we learn through the lyrics of this piece. Students play in Middle C position in 3/4 meter. There are a few accidentals representing Mozart's bark and the black keys that he likes to play. Teachers will appreciate the nod to the real Mozart in Margaret's use of his Minuet in F Major, K. 2 in the melody. This solo makes a wonderful learning link to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Students will be pleased to know that the dog on the cover is taken from a photo of Margaret's puppy.

A Song and a Smile [Piano]
Features:
The first four notes of this solo spell the word FACE, an appropriate tribute to the title. The charming lyrics are sure to bring a smile to the face of your student. The music itself features the melody divided between the hands. Written in the key of F major, the left hand uses a D minor five-finger position, while the right hand is in a C five-finger position. The damper pedal and 8va are also used occasionally throughout the piece. The gentle sound of this piece is enhanced by an optional teacher duet that provides harmony and warmth.

A Song for Summer [Piano]

Dan Coates dedicated this solo to his mother, Mary Anne. Written in a lyrical, flowing style in 4/4 meter, it sounds like a ballad from the Broadway stage. The key of B-flat major gives it a warm, rich sound. Challenges include balance between the melody and accompaniment, wide stretches in the left hand and inner voicing in the right hand.

A Special Day [Piano]

Expressive playing is the hallmark of this solo written in F major. Voicing of the melody is crucial as the right hand often has two-part writing. This piece uses syncopated pedaling to help create a lush sound. Attention to all these details will result in a musical and emotive performance.
