The original work by Haydn was for pairs of oboes and horns plus strings with a single cello/bass line. This straightforward transcription inserts wind parts only when essential to the harmony and constructs a bass part from the cello line. Thus it is a true attempt to allow young string orchestras to experience a Haydn symphony even in a large strings-only ensemble. This work offers a challenge of key and tempo which is balanced by frequent unison scoring to make every part interesting.
