Spacious Firmament on High, The
This thoughtful adaptation from Haydn’s Creation is a wonderful way to incorporate classical music on your next program while working on balance between woodwinds, brass and percussion. It can also function as a lyrical work on your program without the demands of long sustained phrases. Easy to put together, yet still authentic to the original. The Spacious Firmament on High is originally the name of a poem by Joseph Addison, which was inspired by Psalm 19. In much the same way as Addison's text diverges from King David's, Haydn's melody for The Heavens Are Telling from his oratorio The Creation is adapted into a more singable form to align with Addison's lyrics. This simplification also serves our purpose, rendering the famous melody accessible for beginning bands.
