Presented as a standalone piece, Intermezzo was written as an interlude between two of the songs in Bell's song cycle, The Man with Night Sweats - a monodrama encapsulating the compassion, grief, hope and terror of those living through the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. This interlude for solo piano acts as an emotional reset to frame the hard-hitting topics of the surrounding songs.
