Written by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) in the summer of 1875, the year after his "Wagnerian" fourth, SYMPHONY NO. 5 IN F MAJOR, OP. 76/B. 54, lends a pastoral contrast to the heroic nature of the previous symphony. It premiered on March 25, 1879 at the Zofin concert hall in Prague under the direction of Adolf Cech. Simrock finally published it in 1888, following revisions. Dvorak dedicated it to the Hans von Bulow as a gesture to the conductor for promoting his music. It was assigned a high opus number, contrary to the composer's wishes, as his publisher shrewdly decided to sell it as a mature work. This Kalmus Critical Edition is edited by Frantisek Bartos.
