Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed Cantata No. 48: Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlosen, BWV 48 in 1723 during his first annual cycle of cantatas as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, writing it for the Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity. The anonymous libretto opens with Saint Paul's anguished cry from Romans 7:24--"O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"--and traces a spiritual journey from the despair of humanity's sinful condition to the assurance of redemption through Christ.
