Kaija Saariaho's Oltra Mar for chorus and orchestra was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and had its world premiere in 1999 under the baton of Kurt Masur. It includes text by Amin Maalouf and Abou Said and explores themes of love, death and the sea.
