In the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke we read of Jesus entering a place called Gethsemane and praying that 'this cup may pass from me'. A haunting modal melody, interspersed with occasional harmonic dissonance, helps to paint the image of Christ's agony. First, a soloist (or unison voices) describes the scene, followed by a four-part chorus building with intensity the pleading that 'this hour may pass'. This selection may be used during Lent, but is especially appropriate of Holy (Maundy) Thursday.
