Overture: Our Creed is Our Shield was commissioned by the Missouri Unit of American String Teachers Association, Cy Drichta, President, with the assistance of the Missouri Arts Council. Commissioned for the 1981 Missouri All-State High School String Orchestra, it premiered on January 17, 1981, at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference in Osage Beach, Missouri, with Norman Paula conducting.
