In Toccata for a New Millennium, Goemanne couches two themes, the Dies Irae, or Day of Wrath, with the hymn tune St. Anne. Toccata-like textures express the urgency mortality imposes. The Dies Irae reminds us that a day of judgment is certain. Goemanne appropriately concludes with the St. Anne, assuring us that the God of ages past is the God of today, and will be into eternity, and our hope lies in this knowledge. Very appropriate for New Year’s Eve, Reformation, All Saints’ Day, or for concert.
