Morning Jaunt was written for the Clayton High School woodwind ensemble under the direction of Sophie Browning-Brodack. When Sophie asked me to write this piece, I wanted to write a quirky tune that someone might be whistling to themselves as they would take a walk to clear their mind. The music leans into this quirkiness from the very beginning of the piece with a jaunty skip in the clarinets, while still taking momentary pauses to reflect and enjoy the world around them. All prominent oboe and bassoon lines have been cued or doubled in other instruments.
