The text of My Cage is based on the poem, "Flightless Wings" written by 14 year old Sydney Smallwood. The evocative opening line, "I'm finished with my cage; for what interest does a flightless bird have?" sets the tone for the composition. It's loaded with driving, syncopated rhythms throughout, and is accompanied by a thrilling piano part. It also has an optional cello part. My Cage builds to a rousing climax at the end with the line "I must break free!", and would make a great choice as a concert opener or closer.
