Varvindar friska is one of a number of songs traditionally sung on April 30, a festival known in Sweden as Valborgsmassoafton (Walpurgisnight). This festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Its roots go back to pagan times when fires would be lit to ward off evil spirits. It is also celebrated in neighboring Finland and in parts of Germany.
