Meet John Monilaws: Your Dedicated Music Education Road Representative Across Southeastern North Dakota

At Popplers Music, we believe that exceptional music education support goes beyond simply stocking instruments and sheet music on our shelves. It’s about building genuine relationships with educators, understanding their unique needs, and delivering personalized service that makes a real difference in classrooms across North Dakota and Minnesota. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to John Monilaws, one of our valued road representatives who embodies everything we stand for in music education support.
From Student to Educator to Music Industry Professional
John’s journey with Popplers Music began over four decades ago in 1982, when he purchased his first trombone from our road representative as a student. This personal connection to our store has only grown stronger through the years. After dedicating over 30 years to music education, including 17 rewarding years as a band director in Lisbon, North Dakota, John joined our team as a road representative, bringing invaluable teaching experience to his role.
“Popplers was always there for me, on the sheet music side, instrumental side, and repair side,” John reflects on his teaching career. “Always willing to help out with whatever I needed.” Now, he’s on the other side of that relationship, providing the same dedicated support he once received as an educator.
Comprehensive Service Coverage Across Southeastern North Dakota
While Popplers Music is headquartered in Grand Forks, our strategic approach to serving schools throughout North Dakota ensures every educator receives the attention they deserve. John operates from Valley City, where he lives with his wife Stacy, creating a central hub that allows him to efficiently serve schools across southeastern North Dakota and parts of Minnesota.
Cities and Communities We Serve
John’s route covers an extensive network of communities, including Thompson, Buxton, Hillsboro, Hunter, Fargo, Casselton, Enderlin, Lisbon, Gwinner, Wyndmere, Lidgerwood, Hankinson, Wahpeton, Valley City, Jamestown, Oakes, LaMoure, Litchville, Carrington, Midkota, Cooperstown, Mayville, and extending into Minnesota with Moorhead, Glyndon, Hawley, and Breckenridge.
The “Mobile Music Store” Approach

What sets our service apart is John’s innovative approach to supporting music educators. Operating what he calls his “mobile minivan,” John carries essential instrumental supplies with him, ensuring that urgent needs can be met quickly and efficiently. This means if one of his schools needs something between regular route days, and John is available, he’s happy to make a special delivery.
Need supplies between route visits? Don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re here to support your program’s success!
Every other week, John makes his rounds, picking up orders from our Grand Forks location and spending three days visiting schools throughout his territory. This systematic approach ensures consistent, reliable service while respecting the valuable time educators spend with their students.
Respecting Classroom Time and Teaching Expertise
Having spent decades in the classroom himself, John understands the delicate balance required when visiting schools. “Our time with our students is very valuable,” he explains. “I don’t bother anyone. I don’t stand and wave through the window. I drop off their orders and hit the road.”
This respectful approach means teachers can focus on what they do best, teaching music, while knowing their supply needs are being handled efficiently. John only provides advice when asked, recognizing that every educator brings their own expertise and teaching style to their program.
Comprehensive Instrument Repair and Loaner Services
Music education never stops, and neither should student learning due to instrument issues. When repairs are needed, instruments are brought back to our Grand Forks location where our skilled repair technicians get them back in working condition. During the repair process, John provides loaner instruments to ensure students can continue participating in their music programs without interruption.
“Nothing works on the student in band without a horn,” John notes from his teaching experience. “I’ve been there. I know how that goes.” This commitment to keeping students engaged and learning is at the heart of our service philosophy.
Knowledge-Based Support You Can Trust
What truly distinguishes Popplers Music is our team’s deep understanding of both instruments and music education. When you call our store, you’re not just reaching someone who can pull music off a shelf – you’re connecting with knowledgeable professionals who understand your needs as an educator.
John emphasizes this point: “They knew the stuff. The instrument people knew about the horns, the sheet music people knew about the music. You could call and say, ‘I have this many kids in my band and this is my instrumentation,’ and they’d say, ‘I think this will work.'”
Flexible Approval Policies That Support Smart Decision-Making
One of the most valuable services we offer music educators is our approval policy for sheet music. This allows teachers to receive music selections, evaluate them with their programs for a couple of weeks, and make informed decisions about what works best for their students.
“That’s huge,” John explains about his experience using this service as a teacher in Lisbon. “We could get stuff down there, keep it for a couple of weeks, kick the tires on it and see what we thought about it.”
This approach acknowledges that every music program is unique, and what works for one group may not be the perfect fit for another. Our approval policy gives educators the flexibility to make choices based on actual experience with the music, not just catalog descriptions.
Building Relationships That Last Decades
Ready to start building a lasting partnership with Popplers Music? Contact John or our team to discuss how we can support your music education goals!
The relationship between Popplers Music and the educators we serve goes far beyond simple transactions. John’s 40-plus year connection with our store – first as a customer, then as a dedicated teacher, and now as a team member – exemplifies the long-term partnerships we build throughout the music education community.
At music education conventions, we regularly meet customers who have been working with Popplers Music for over 40 years. These relationships are built on trust, expertise, and a shared commitment to supporting student musicians across our region.
Looking Forward: Expanding Our Reach
As music education continues to evolve and grow throughout North Dakota and Minnesota, we’re expanding our services to meet new needs. This year, John is extending his route to include the Jamestown area, working with new teachers and ensuring they receive the same level of dedicated support that has defined our service for decades.
