Parts of Your Instrument That Might Need Changing: What to Check Before School Starts

The start of a new school year means it’s time to tune up more than just your skills, it’s time to check your instrument, too! Over the summer, instruments can experience wear and tear, even while sitting in their cases. From squeaky reeds to rusty strings, a few quick maintenance checks now can help you start strong and avoid disruptions during rehearsal.

At Popplers Music, we’re here to support students, parents, and directors with expert guidance and quality accessories to keep instruments in peak playing condition. Below is a helpful checklist to make sure you’re ready for band or orchestra when school begins!

🎷 For Woodwinds: Quick Fixes That Make a Big Difference

Reeds:
Reeds don’t last forever. If yours looks chipped, discolored, or just doesn’t respond like it used to, it’s time for a replacement. It’s smart to have at least 3 playable reeds on hand for weekly rotation.

Cork Grease & Key Oil:
Dry corks or sticky keys can make assembling and playing your instrument a struggle. Fresh cork grease and a few drops of key oil go a long way in improving the feel and function of your clarinet, saxophone, or oboe.

Pads:
Check for loose or worn-out pads. If your notes aren’t sealing properly or you’re noticing an airy sound, this could be the cause. Our repair shop can help diagnose and replace leaking pads.

Cleaning Supplies:
Swabs, cloths, and brushes wear down over time. Replace any cleaning tools that are frayed, discolored, or have a musty odor from summer storage.

📌 Pro tip: New reeds, clean swabs, and a fresh tube of cork grease are essentials every woodwind player should have at the ready.

🎺 For Brass: Get Back That Brilliant Sound

Valve Oil & Slide Grease:
If your valves are slow or your slides are stuck, chances are your oil or grease has dried out. Reapply fresh lubricant and enjoy smoother playing right away.

Water Key Corks:
These small corks are often overlooked but are vital to sealing the horn and preventing leaks. If they appear dry, cracked, or missing, it’s time for a new one.

Mouthpieces:
Inspect your mouthpiece for chips, dents, or grime buildup. If it’s beyond cleaning, consider upgrading to a new one that helps you produce your best tone.

Case Check:
Open your case and inspect the lining, zippers, and straps. A damaged case could put your instrument at risk during travel to school and performances.

📌 Bring your instrument into Popplers—we’ll check it for you and help you find exactly what you need.

🎻 For Strings: Is Your String Instrument Ready to Sing?

Strings:
Old strings lose their resonance and tuning stability. If they look worn, feel gritty, or you can’t remember when you last replaced them, it’s probably time.

Bow Hair:
Over time, bow hair can stretch, snap, or lose its grip on the strings. If your bow feels slippery or has broken hairs, it may be due for a rehair.

Rosin:
Cracked or crumbly rosin won’t perform well. A fresh cake ensures better sound and control, especially for new players still developing their technique.

Fine Tuners & Pegs:
Check that fine tuners turn easily and pegs hold their place. If anything feels stuck or too loose, bring it in for an adjustment.
