Yamaha Disklavier Overview – Best Modern Day Player Piano On The Market
Welcome to Popplers Music. My name is Josh. Let’s talk pianos.
Today, we are going to talk about Yamaha’s modern-day player piano, which is called the Disklavier. There are a few aspects of the Disklavier to be aware of so we are going to break down the different Disklavier models that are available, which piano models each Disklavier package is available on, and the amazing features, such as Disklavier Radio, Disklavier TV, recording capability, and remote lesson.
In 1982, it started with a simple idea, to craft an acoustic piano with a recording and playback system unlike any other. Almost 40 years of continuous innovation have created an acoustic piano that can faithfully reproduce every nuance of the performance and stream it wirelessly anywhere in the world, including your living room.
It’s no wonder the Yamaha Disklavier has become the reproducing piano everyone is trying to reproduce. There are three different Disklavier models, the CL, ST, and Pro. The main difference between the three models, starting with the CL package, is that the CL cannot record your playing as the CL does not have technology connectivity to the pedal units.
As you move up the series to the ST, you gain the ability to record your performances and execute remote lessons. With the Pro version of the Disklavier, you gain a much higher level of sensitivity and nuance to the recording capability and remote lesson ability.
The CL is only available on Yamaha’s GB1K 5’ baby grand piano. The ST model is available on the GB1K, GC series, C1X, C2X, U1, and YUS series. The Pro version is available on all of Yamaha’s CX (Excluding C1X and C2X), SX, and CF grand piano models.
For more information on each of the piano models, we have outlined most of Yamaha’s grand pianos on our website and YouTube channel.
Disklavier Radio has 500 built-in songs for you to enjoy, but also has a subscription service with Yamaha that gives you access to 9,000 different songs in many different genres. Keep in mind there are speakers under the piano for the other instruments in each song, but the piano part is always your piano playing itself.
If you choose to subscribe to Disklavier Radio, you will also gain access to Disklavier TV which is a video streaming service with an ever-expanding library of video performances that will stream directly to your piano. Let me explain.
Because the Disklavier has the ability to record a performance, when an artist records their performance in sync with a video, Yamaha can stream video performances for you to watch and enjoy in the comfort of your home and on your TV.
Let’s take a look at how recording your performances works on the Disklavier. On the Disklavier Pro, you’re recording your performance at 1,024 levels of keying velocity and recording your pedaling at 256 levels of incremental pedaling. This ensures your recording will turn out exactly as you play it.
Lastly, with remote lesson, you can connect any two Disklaviers in the world as long as you have an internet connection. For example, we have connected the University of North Dakota with the University of Minnesota and UND with Arizona State University for remote lessons.
Remote lesson opens up a new world of educational opportunity for institutions and individuals. Thank you so much for watching. If you have any questions, we would be more than happy to help. Please feel welcome to reach out to us at popplerspiano.com or give us a call.
