In 1824, when Lowell Mason wrote the tune to the hymn text "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross", he indicated that the source of the tune was Gregorian Plainsong. Ronald Kauffman, set forth in his 3 octave handbell arrangement of this hymn, a style which is an uncomplicated embellishment of that lovely plainsong tune. With careful assignment of a few accidentals, this selection is perfect for the beginning choir as well as any choir wishing to perform one of the finest hymns ever written.
