This setting of Willa Cather's poem begins with open, sustained harmonies and sparse textures meant to evoke the expansiveness of the prairie. The song journeys through a contrapuntal section that embodies the task of working the land, then radically shifts tonality and character with the mood-lifting introduction of "Youth." A truly powerful musical experience for both choir and audience awaits with "Prairie Spring."
