Based on the volcanic energy that destroyed Pompeii in 79 A.D., the composition has several themes. The first theme is introduced in measure 47. Theme two begins in measure 83 with a rhythmic quality to it. Theme three at measure 146 gives a more seductive quality. And theme four evolves from a four note motif to something more elaborate. A very effective work which explores a number of meter changes.
