Marche Slav, opus 31, was composed in 1876 to honor the Serbian heroes of the Turco-Serbian war. Premiered in Moscow on November 17, 1876, it was warmly received by the audience. Immediately afterwards, TchaikovskyA's exclusive publisher, Paul Jurgenson, published the full orchestral score and various piano and band transcriptions of this A"hit.A" The arrangement for piano two hands, prepared by Tchaikovsky at JurgensonA's request, is an interesting example of the composerA's early piano style. This publication is based on 19th-century editions by Jurgenson and Rahter. This is the first new edition of the work since the 19th century. I have added pedal markings, fingerings, occasional hairpins, and some expressive markings. Detailed instrument indications have been taken from the orchestral score to convey the composerA's orchestral ideas. In order to highlight various layers of the complex orchestral texture, I have suggested practical hand distribution options. This is in keeping with the composerA's mature style, which is saturated with orchestral and vocal allusions.
