A Prayer of the Middle Ages, Hanson's first work for chorus a cappella, was written in 1976 during the latter part of his life. The piece was dedicated to Margaret Nelson Hanson, Hanson's wife since 1946. The text is an anonymous 8th century poem translated into English by James Francis Cooke.
