Debussy's 10th Prelude for solo piano is the beloved Sunken Cathedral (recorded in 1930 by Stokowski as The Engulfed Cathedral). In this allusory impressionistic work, Debussy recalls the ancient myth of a cathedral submerged below the sea which rises on occasion. Debussy depicts a resounding organ in fortissimo chords, as the cathedral emerges from the water, and Thorne re-imagines this setting for clarinet choir. Thorne neatly replicates the technical demands on the pianist, although the range is slightly reduced to accommodate the clarinets.
