Pursuing an education in violin and composition at the Moscow Conservatory, Paul Juon (1872-1940) completed his studies in Berlin and went on to train a generation of composers including Hans Chemin-Petit and Stefan Wolpe. He published his FIVE PIECES FOR STRING ORCHESTRA, Op. 16, in 1901. Uniquely for a string orchestra work, the piece includes ad libitum parts for triangle and tambourine.
