The constellation Equuleus means "the Foal" or "Little Horse" and lies between Pegasus and Delphinus. The original name may have been Equus Primus ("First Horse") because it rises before Pegasus each evening. The origin of the name and story, however, has been lost in antiquity, but several sources believe Equuleus may have referred to Celeris, Pegasus's half brother. Established in the second century B.C., Equuleus is one of the smallest constellations and quite old. Included in the 48 Ptolemaic constellations, Equuleus is traditionally thought to have been founded by Ptolemy, but others believe the true founder may have been Hipparchus.
