“Es ist ein’ Ros entsprungen” is a German folk carol dating from the fifteenth or sixteenth century; it was included in several German Catholic hymnals shortly thereafter. Most present-day choirs have come to learn the piece through the harmonization of Praetorious, whose setting is augmented here by a fauxbourdon treatment of the second stanza by Proulx. This arrangement was featured in two episodes of the HBO series The White Lotus, season 3, which aired in 2025.
